Dangerous goods transport across ADR Classes 2 to 9

Isospeed7 is best known as a specialist Class 7 carrier. The capability does not stop there. We also carry dangerous goods across Classes 2 to 9 under ADR’s limited quantities provisions, with the same discipline our radioactive material work demands.

ADR, the international agreement governing the carriage of dangerous goods by road, sets the rules for how dangerous goods are classified, packaged, marked, documented and carried, and for how the drivers and vehicles involved must be trained and equipped. It divides dangerous goods into nine classes according to the hazard they present.

What the classes cover

Class 2 covers gases. Class 3 covers flammable liquids, and Class 4 flammable solids and related substances. Class 5 covers oxidising substances and organic peroxides, Class 6 toxic and infectious substances, Class 7 radioactive material, Class 8 corrosives, and Class 9 miscellaneous dangerous goods, a broad class that includes items such as lithium batteries. Each class carries its own requirements for packaging, segregation, documentation and equipment.

Limited quantities, properly handled

Beyond our core Class 7 work, Isospeed7 carries dangerous goods across Classes 2 to 9 under ADR’s limited quantities provisions. Limited quantities is the part of ADR that applies to dangerous goods packaged in small inner packagings, where the reduced quantity justifies a proportionate easing of some carriage requirements. A great deal of everyday dangerous goods movement in the UK is legitimately carried out on exactly this basis.

Limited quantities carriage is not unregulated carriage. Consignments must still be correctly classified, packaged and marked to the applicable requirements and properly documented, and our drivers hold current ADR qualifications. For consignments that fall outside the limited quantities provisions, speak to our team first. We will always be clear about what we can carry as things stand and what would need to be put in place.

The same discipline throughout

Carrying dangerous goods correctly is a matter of classification, documentation, load segregation, vehicle equipment and driver training, overseen by dangerous goods safety advice. Those obligations do not relax for the less exotic classes. A carrier that has built its operation around Class 7, where the regulator is the same body that oversees the nuclear industry, applies that same standard of care when the consignment is a corrosive, a flammable liquid or a compressed gas.

One specialist partner

For organisations that move dangerous goods across more than one class, consolidating those movements with a specialist carrier, within the quantity provisions that apply, simplifies compliance rather than complicating it: one point of accountability, one documentation standard and one partner whose core business is regulated carriage, not general haulage with dangerous goods as a sideline.
